Recommendations

As issued by the authors

  1. All adult patients with an ICU length of stay ≥ 48 h are recommended for follow-up, with an initial contact within 1 week of ICU discharge to assess clinical status, identify early problems and ensure continuity of care.

  2. Patients and their families are recommended to be offered an outpatient follow-up visit at 2-3 months after discharge, led by ICU clinicians and, when possible, delivered by a multidisciplinary team.

  3. Validated screening tools and objective tests are recommended to assess relevant outcomes, including post-traumatic stress, anxiety, depression, cognitive impairment, physical function and Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) as appropriate.

  4. Patients with identified problems should be referred to appropriate healthcare providers or specialist services for further management.
